Instagram post 2190329118109912905_8628834001 Today is International Day of People with Disability, #IDPWD.
At YES, we’re interested in how being young when job searching or working intersects with lots of other things like gender and overlapping identities – including disability, race, religion and sexual orientation.

In an effort to learn more about these interactions, the YES study is recruiting young people aged 15-25 Australia-wide who have been looking for work and have attended an employment program. It’s not too late to participate! www.yes-study.org.au

Instagram post 2106453369821785425_8628834001 UNDEREMPLOYMENT ⏰

Have you heard of the term 'underemployment' before? Underemployment describes people who are employed but want to work more hours than they are receiving. And the underemployment rate is ESPECIALLY high for young people. 😤

Over a third of all young people aged 15-29 years are underemployed and 20% of young people aged 20-24 years are underemployed. No other age bracket sees more than 9% of workers in this position.

Does this sound like you? 👋

More young workers work part-time and often seek more hours. Research suggests that young workers who are underemployed are more likely to work multiple jobs, have less job security, and are more likely to leave the workforce all together.

If this sounds like you and you've been looking for work/more work and have been involved in an employment program - we want to hear from you!

Have your voice heard today and participate in the YES study! www.srcentre.com.au/YES
Instagram post 2106444003714324087_8628834001 Two posts today because we missed out on yesterday!

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT 'HOTSPOTS' 🇦🇺 Did you know that youth unemployment rates differ SUBSTANTIALLY across the country? There are parts of Australia where the risk of unemployment is much higher than the national average.

In outback Queensland, the youth unemployment rate is at it's highest. Over a quarter of young people (25.7%) are unemployed in outback Queensland 😕

That's why we want to hear from lots of young people from all parts of the country so we can learn more about the kinds of things that can be done to help young people from different backgrounds and in different locations!

If you're from NSW - the highest youth unemployment rate is in Coffs Harbour (23.3%). In Victoria it is Bendigo (18.3%), Tassie it is South East (17.8%), in Western Australia it is North West Perth (16.7%) and in South Australia it is the Barossa (15.3%). Everywhere else is hovering closer to the national average for young people (12%). Share your thoughts and experiences - participate in YES today! www.srcentre.com.au/YES
Instagram post 2104946708414028076_8628834001 The YES survey is live and so we think it's about time to tell you a little more about why we think this study is so important! 📊

For the next 7 days, we'll be posting a different statistic in relation to youth unemployment/underemployment/employment. Some you'll know and some you won't, but they all add up to show that this is an important area we need to learn more about!

THE YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE!

This is a statistic you may have seen around, but we know that the youth unemployment rate is around double that of the general unemployment rate (which is hovering around 5%). We can all agree this isn't good enough. Especially because of all the benefits that come with employment! These aren't just earning money or work experience - but lots of other things like getting to know new people and feeling like you're part of society more broadly.

This 12% is a number we need to get down! But we need your help to build the evidence around why this is an important issue and what we can do differently.
